Which Safety Course Is Right for Me?

Health and safety has a lot of course names and a lot of letters: NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA. If you are new, it is easy to feel lost, and it is easy to spend money on a course that does not match your goal. The right course depends on what you want to do next.

Answer the questions below, and you will get a recommendation.

How the quiz works

The quiz asks about your goal and your experience. Your goal is the most important part. It points to the course that matches the kind of work you want to do. Your experience helps to fine-tune the advice.

The five goals and the course for each

  • Start a career in health and safety: NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC)
  • Manage safety in my current job: IOSH Managing Safely
  • Work on a construction or industrial site: an OSHA safety course
  • Learn fire safety: a fire safety course
  • Learn first aid: a first aid course

NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC)

NEBOSH is a respected awarding body, and the IGC is one of the most popular safety qualifications in the world. It is designed for people who want to work as a safety officer, safety coordinator or safety advisor, or who want to move up in a safety role. It covers how safety is managed, how risks are assessed, and the main workplace hazards, and it ends with exams and a practical assessment.

Choose this one if you want a career in safety, or if you want a qualification that employers in many countries, including the Gulf, will recognise. You do not need a long background in safety to start, but you should be ready for a serious study workload. The NEBOSH study planner can help you plan it.

IOSH Managing Safely

IOSH Managing Safely is a short course for managers and supervisors who are responsible for a team, but who are not safety specialists. It teaches the basics: understanding your responsibilities, assessing risks, controlling hazards, investigating incidents and measuring performance. The course lasts a few days and ends with a short assessment.

Choose this one if safety is part of your job but not your whole job, for example if you manage a site, a workshop, a warehouse or a shift.

OSHA safety courses

OSHA courses come from the US occupational safety system. The most common ones are the 10-hour course, aimed at workers, and the 30-hour course, aimed at supervisors and people with more safety responsibility. They are available for construction and for general industry. They focus on practical hazards: falls, electrical safety, machine guarding, scaffolds, hazardous materials and more.

Choose this if you work on, or want to work on, a construction or industrial site, or if your employer or client asks for OSHA training.

Fire safety course

A fire safety course teaches how fires start and spread, how to prevent them, how to use extinguishers, and how to run an evacuation. It is useful for fire wardens, facility staff, supervisors and anyone in charge of a building. To get an idea of the topic, try the fire extinguisher quantity calculator and the fire evacuation time calculator.

First aid course

A first aid course teaches you how to respond to bleeding, burns, choking, fainting and heart emergencies until help arrives. It is useful for everyone, and it is often needed in workplaces. Our first aiders required calculator shows how many trained people a workplace needs.

Does your experience change the answer?

Yes, a little. If you are new to safety, you can start at the beginning with the course for your goal. If you already have some experience, you may be ready for a deeper course. For someone with experience who wants a safety career, the NEBOSH IGC is a strong next step, because it builds on what you already know and gives you a recognised certificate.

Other things to think about

  • Your job plans: look at job adverts for the roles that you want, and see which qualifications they ask for
  • Your employer or client: some will ask for a particular course
  • Your budget and time: longer courses cost more and need more study. Use the course fee instalment calculator to plan your payments
  • Your country: check which qualifications are accepted where you want to work
  • Your level of English: most courses are taught and examined in English, so be honest about how ready you are

Can you take more than one course?

Yes, and many people do. A common path is to start with a short course such as IOSH Managing Safely or an OSHA course, get some experience, and then move on to NEBOSH. Others take first aid and fire safety on top of their main course, because those skills are useful in every workplace.

Common mistakes when choosing a course

  • Choosing the cheapest course without checking that it matches your goal
  • Taking a high-level course before you are ready for the study
  • Not checking if employers in your target country accept the qualification
  • Choosing a provider that is not approved by the awarding body
  • Not asking about the exam dates and the full cost
